Two Rescued After Jetski Sinks in Norwalk Long Island Sound

Connecticut’s Waters: A Reminder of Safety After Separate Jet Ski Incidents

Connecticut’s waterways—always a favorite for recreation and those postcard-worthy coastal views—recently saw two separate jet ski mishaps. Let’s get into what happened: a dramatic rescue in Norwalk and another, less intense, situation near Westport. Maybe there’s something for all boating fans to take away here, whether you’re out by Greenwich or cruising off Madison.

Norwalk Rescue: A Close Call Off Chimon Island

On Wednesday evening, the Norwalk Police Department jumped into action after a distress call. Around 5:11 p.m., someone reported two people and a sinking jet ski near Chimon Island.

Quick Action Prevents Tragedy

Officers from the Norwalk Marine Unit got there fast and found the two men in the cold water. Their main concern was getting them out, especially since the water was only getting colder.

Both guys were already showing signs of early hypothermia. The officers’ quick thinking really made the difference here.

They pulled the men onto a police boat and got them into the warm cabin right away.

After that, they focused on getting everyone safely back to shore.

While they headed in, another police boat went back to recover the submerged jet ski. It’s not just about the people—no one wants junk floating around for other boaters to hit, especially with all the traffic between Fairfield and Stamford.

At Veteran’s Memorial Park Marina, Norwalk paramedics were ready and waiting. They checked out the rescued men and gave them immediate treatment.

Officials said later that, thankfully, neither man was seriously hurt. If there’s a lesson here for anyone out on the water near Norwalk, Darien, or anywhere along Connecticut’s coast, it’s to take safety gear and water temps seriously.

Westport: Smoke and a Disabled Craft

Just a few hours after the Norwalk rescue, something else cropped up on the western side of Westport. This time, someone reported a disabled jet ski near Goose Island.

A Swift Resolution with No Water Entry

The main thing here was the jet ski—smoke billowed from it, clearly a mechanical problem, not a capsize. Luckily, the operator was already safe aboard a Westport police boat.

Norwalk Marine Unit sent officers to help out, showing how well these agencies work together. Even though things were under control, their quick response highlighted the teamwork you see along Connecticut’s coast, from Mystic all the way down to the busy harbors near the southwest.

The jet ski operator never ended up in the water, so there was no immediate danger like hypothermia or drowning. Still, it’s a reminder—watercraft can be unpredictable, and breakdowns happen when you least expect them.

If you’re heading out on Connecticut’s lakes or coastline, it’s worth remembering: always prioritize safety. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or just out for a spin on a jet ski, being prepared and staying aware really matters. Connecticut’s waterways are beautiful—let’s keep them safe for everyone.
