The chase really put a spotlight on just how determined our state’s police can be. Still, it’s hard not to notice the risks they—and everyone else—face during moments like this.
A Dash Through Fairfield County
Around noon on Tuesday, a Shelton police officer spotted a white Nissan Altima with a license plate that didn’t look quite right. Turns out, the driver—George Jakubowski of Bridgeport—was already wanted for allegedly damaging police vehicles in a previous chase with Milford police.
The officer tried to pull the Altima over near Huntington Turnpike and Trap Falls Road, but things didn’t go as planned. The car crashed, then sped away.
Escalation and Schoolyard Scare
Troopers from Connecticut State Police jumped in as the chase wound through Stratford, darting past Nichols and Penny avenues. The Nissan blew through red lights and passed cars at speeds that most of us would never dare.
Suddenly, the Altima veered off the road and barreled onto the soccer field and playground at Second Hill Lane Elementary School. No one got hurt, which feels like a miracle—or maybe just pure luck.
I-95 Becomes the Final Stage
The chase didn’t slow down as it tore through Stratford and into Bridgeport, then onto Route 8 South. Eventually, the Altima shot onto the ramp for I-95 South.
State Police kept up the pursuit on the busy highway. The whole thing finally ended on I-95 South near Exit 19 after the Altima crashed a few more times and broke down.
Jakubowski tried to make a run for it on foot, but officers caught him.
The Charges and Their Consequences
George Jakubowski, 32, of Bridgeport, faces a litany of serious charges. These include second-degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, and improper use of maker plates.
Authorities also say they found drug paraphernalia on him. Police held Jakubowski on a $10,000 bond while he waited for his day in court.
His passenger, 32-year-old Louann Bodnar, landed in legal trouble too. According to police, Bodnar locked the vehicle and ignored their commands.
Things escalated quickly after that. She apparently climbed into the backseat, set up a substance on foil, lit it, and breathed in the smoke through a straw.
Police arrested Bodnar and charged her with possession. She was held on a $5,000 bond.
Both Jakubowski and Bodnar were supposed to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court to answer for the allegations. Officers from Shelton, Milford, Stratford, and Bridgeport all had a hand in bringing this wild chase to an end.
