New Haven Takes the Lead with CitySeed’s Expanded Reach

New Haven stands out in this movement, thanks in large part to CitySeed’s hands-on work. This nonprofit connects about 60 Connecticut farms to a lively network of farmers markets.

Governor Ned Lamont recently stopped by CitySeed’s new spot at 162 James Street. He praised their impact on the state’s food landscape and seemed genuinely impressed.

The new CitySeed facility sits right in a New Haven neighborhood that’s really felt the pain from recent SNAP cuts. That location isn’t an accident. Christine Kim, who serves on both the New Haven Board of Alders and CitySeed’s board, put it best—this building is meant to create “upstream opportunities in the food system.” It’s about supporting the local economy and giving farmers a real shot at success.

A Culinary Hub for Community and Commerce

There’s more to CitySeed’s new building than just logistics. The place features a slick commercial kitchen, and local chefs are making the most of it. Kosarachi Okwunna of Kosy’s African Kitchen, for one, uses the space to whip up fresh, affordable meals for folks who might not have easy access to good food. It’s a team effort that feels pretty inspiring.

Sarah Miller, CitySeed’s executive director, can’t hide her excitement about the new setup. She says it lets them open up more market opportunities for Connecticut farmers. Now, even more local produce can reach schools, restaurants, and food pantries in towns all over the state.
