Newark Woman Pleads Guilty To $410K CT Bank Fraud

The Anatomy of a Massive Financial Fraud Scheme

Court documents indicate that Pettaway utilized a stolen identity alongside a fake New Jersey driver’s license. She successfully opened a fraudulent account at a Charter Oak Federal Credit Union location back in August 2024.

Following this initial setup, she returned the very next month to deposit the massive federal check. Fortunately, the credit union recognized suspicious elements and promptly rejected the transaction.

Escalating Crimes and Subsequent Arrests

Criminal enterprises often test the waters before repeating offenses in various cities and towns throughout the region. Prosecutors noted that Pettaway repeated her playbook in June 2025 by opening yet another account using a different fake identity.

Law enforcement finally caught up with her when East Lyme police executed an arrest on state charges in July 2025. Officers discovered a fake New York driver’s license and three fraudulent debit cards in her possession at that time.

Federal Charges and Pending Sentencing

Following her initial local apprehensions, federal authorities stepped in to handle the broader scope of the financial crimes. Pettaway faced a federal criminal complaint in August 2025 and was subsequently released on a $100,000 bond.

She now faces a staggering maximum penalty of 30 years in prison for her crimes. Her official sentencing hearing has been scheduled for December 21.

Collaborative Law Enforcement Efforts

Crimes of this magnitude require extensive cooperation between municipal departments and federal investigators to protect local financial assets. Multiple agencies worked tirelessly on this investigation.

Key organizations involved in bringing the perpetrator to justice included:

  • The U.S. Postal Inspection Service
  • Local municipal police departments
  • Federal prosecutors in Bridgeport

As our community continues to learn more about Connecticut legal proceedings, this case serves as a stark reminder of vigilance. Financial institutions and local authorities remain dedicated to safeguarding the public from high-stakes identity theft.
