History of Two Roads Brewing Company

Two Roads Brewing Company has a fascinating story that starts with a dream and grows into a successful craft brewery celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2025.

Founding and Early Days

Two Roads Brewing Company was founded in 2012 by four friends who shared a passion for craft beer. They embraced a “road less traveled” philosophy, which became central to their brewing approach. The friends brought on Phil Markowski, an experienced brewmaster with over 27 years in the craft beer industry at the time, to lead their brewing operations.

The brewery found its home in Stratford, Connecticut, in a renovated factory building that once housed U.S. Baird Factory. Instead of starting fresh, they chose to preserve the building’s history. You can still see this dedication to heritage in their tasting room, where the bar panels are made from old wood from the original factory.

Phil Markowski brought valuable expertise to Two Roads, having authored “Farmhouse Ales, Culture and Craftsmanship in the Belgian Tradition.”

Growth and Expansion

As Two Roads grew in popularity, they expanded their reach beyond just making their own beers. They became contract brewers for other well-known craft beer brands including Evil Twin, Stillwater, Lawson’s Finest Liquids, and Peak Organic. This approach helped them build relationships throughout the craft beer world while maximizing their brewing capacity.

Their biggest expansion came with the creation of “Area Two,” a separate facility focusing on specialty brews. This tasting room showcases their commitment to history and sustainability, featuring tables made from wood reclaimed from an 1860s church in Westerly, Rhode Island, and stool tops created from Connecticut tobacco barn planks.

By 2025, Two Roads celebrated its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of growth from a small local brewery to a significant player in the Northeast craft beer scene.

Brewing Philosophy

Two Roads Brewing Company lives by their philosophy to “take the road less traveled” in their beers, inspired by Robert Frost’s famous poem. This approach shapes everything from their unique beer styles to their business practices.

Commitment to Quality

At Two Roads, quality comes first. Their award-winning Brew Master, Phil Markowski, brings 27 years of craft beer experience to create unique twists on classic beer styles. You’ll find this expertise in every sip you take.

The brewery invested in top-quality brewing and packaging equipment to ensure each beer meets their high standards. This dedication shows in their extensive lineup that pushes boundaries while honoring traditional brewing methods.

When you visit the tasting room, you can sample their craft beers in various forms—pints, tasters, or grab some cans to go. Each option lets you experience their commitment to excellence firsthand.

Sustainability Practices

Two Roads embraces sustainability throughout their brewing process. You’ll appreciate how they breathed new life into the abandoned U.S. Baird Factory, a massive 103,652 sq. ft. building with historic significance.

Rather than building from scratch, they repurposed this industrial space, preserving its character while creating a modern brewery. This adaptive reuse represents their philosophy in action.

The company implements various green initiatives in their daily operations. These practices reduce their environmental footprint while producing exceptional beers.

When you tour the facility, you’ll see how their “road less traveled” approach extends beyond beer recipes to include responsible resource management and community stewardship.
