History of Slater Memorial Museum

The Slater Memorial Museum has a rich heritage spanning over 135 years as one of America’s most unique cultural institutions, remarkably situated on the grounds of a secondary school.

Founding and Early Years

In 1886, William Albert Slater made a generous gift to honor his father, John Fox Slater, a successful Norwich industrialist. William was an educated man who appreciated fine arts and often traveled to France with his wife Eleanor, where they collected contemporary art.

Robert Porter Keep, the principal of Norwich Free Academy at the time, played a crucial role. He convinced William to expand his initial building donation to include funds for acquiring art. This led to the purchase of 227 plaster casts of classical and Renaissance sculptures.

The museum building, designed in Richardsonian Romanesque style by architect Stephen C. Earle, is considered his finest work. Construction began in 1885, and the museum was dedicated in 1886, opening to the public in 1888.

Significant Developments

The Slater Memorial Museum holds a special distinction as one of only two fine arts museums in the United States located on a secondary school campus. This unique positioning has made it an exceptional educational resource for generations of students.

Over its first century, the museum consistently expanded its collections to represent diverse world cultures. What began primarily as a collection of European plaster casts evolved to include fine and decorative arts from around the globe.

The museum’s mission developed to focus on awakening visitors to the richness of human experience through art and history. Today, you can explore permanent exhibits featuring Classical and Renaissance works alongside artifacts from many world cultures.

The museum building itself is historically significant and is recognized as a contributing property to the architectural heritage of Norwich, Connecticut.

Exhibits and Collections

The Slater Memorial Museum houses a diverse array of artistic treasures that span cultures and time periods. Their collection invites visitors to explore humanity’s creative achievements under one historic roof.

Permanent Collections

The museum’s permanent galleries showcase artwork and cultural artifacts from around the world. Since its inaugural exhibition in 1888, the museum has featured an impressive collection of plaster casts that remain on display today. These casts represent classical and Renaissance masterpieces.

You’ll be amazed by the Ellis Walter Ruley Collection, a newer addition that highlights the work of this notable Norwich African American artist. Ruley’s remarkable journey from construction worker to nationally-acclaimed artist is beautifully documented through his paintings.

Visiting Exhibitions

The Slater Memorial Museum regularly hosts special exhibitions that bring fresh perspectives to this historic space. One of their most anticipated annual events is the Connecticut Artists Juried Exhibition, with the 79th edition opening on January 25, 2025.

You’ll also find other national exhibitions throughout the year. The CWA Annual National Open Juried Exhibition is a highlight, typically featuring opening receptions and award ceremonies that bring artists and art lovers together.

Following recent renovations, including roof restoration and gallery improvements, the museum reopened in May with refreshed exhibits. These updates have enhanced your viewing experience while preserving the historic character of this unique museum, which is one of only two in the United States located on a high school campus.
