History of Bishops Orchards Winery

Bishop’s Orchards has deep roots in Connecticut’s agricultural heritage, with the family farm evolving over generations before establishing their renowned winery in the early 2000s.

Founding and Early Years

Bishop’s Orchards began as a family farm in 1871 when Walter Bishop purchased the original 52-acre property in Guilford, Connecticut. For over a century, the farm focused on traditional agriculture, growing apples and other fruits that would later become the foundation of their winemaking venture.

The family maintained their agricultural traditions through six generations, carefully preserving their farming heritage while adapting to changing markets. Each generation of the Bishop family maintained hands-on control of all aspects of the farm operation.

Before becoming known for wine, Bishop’s Orchards built a strong reputation for high-quality fruits and farm products. Their commitment to excellence created the perfect foundation for their eventual expansion into winemaking.

Development and Expansion

In November 2005, after receiving all necessary state and federal approvals, Bishop’s Orchards officially launched their winery operation. This exciting venture represented a natural evolution for the farm, allowing them to transform their homegrown fruits into delightful wines.

Under the guidance of Winemaker Keith Bishop, the winery began producing a diverse collection of fruit wines. They specialize in wines made from farm-grown fruits including apple, peach, pear, strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry, plus creative blends combining these fruits.

Today, you can find over 15 different fruit wines produced on-site at Bishop’s Orchards Winery. Many of these have earned awards and recognition for their quality and distinctive flavors.

The farm has expanded significantly from its original footprint to encompass 313 acres. When you visit, you’ll experience not just a winery, but a complete farm market and tourist destination that celebrates Connecticut’s agricultural traditions.

Bishop’s Orchards Winery offers a delightful escape into the world of fruit wines and hard ciders in a charming farm setting. You can taste unique locally-made wines while learning about the winemaking process that has made this family business special since 1871.
