CT Food Pantries Reveal Hard Choices For Struggling Residents

A comprehensive new report released by Connecticut Foodshare and UConn’s Health Equity Lab for the People sheds light on the stark realities facing residents who rely on local food pantries. Titled “Experiences of Neighbors Who Access Food Pantries,” the study surveyed 524 guests across 17 randomly selected distribution sites between March and July 2025.

The findings illustrate the profound economic challenges shaping daily life across various cities and towns in our region. With roughly 560,000 residents statewide experiencing food insecurity, community leaders are using this data to shape future support strategies.

Hard Choices For Vulnerable Families

The data reveals that an overwhelming 76% of pantry visitors had to choose between purchasing groceries and covering other critical household expenses over the past year. These difficult financial tradeoffs most frequently involved prioritizing housing, utility bills, and transportation costs over nutritional needs.

Furthermore, 82% of respondents reported that at least a quarter of their household groceries came from a food assistance program in the prior three months. This heavy reliance underscores how deeply economic pressures are impacting families throughout our local Connecticut counties.

Demographics of Food Insecurity

The study breaks down who is being affected by these rising costs, noting that over half of the surveyed households included children. Additionally, 38% of guests were seniors aged 60 and older who are trying to stretch fixed incomes.

When exploring the broader landscape about Connecticut, researchers found that economic strain crosses many employment and demographic boundaries. Key demographic data points from the survey include:

  • 34% of pantry visitors were actively working yet still struggled to make ends meet.
  • 21% of respondents reported that English was not their primary language.
  • 26% of participants had been visiting a food pantry for six months or less.

That final statistic points to a persistent, ongoing need driven heavily by the rising cost of living. Many individuals find themselves seeking emergency food assistance for the very first time as inflation outpaces wage growth.

Looking Toward Multi-Sector Solutions

Ultimately, this collaborative report aims to guide multi-sector strategies designed to improve health equity across the state. Addressing these access barriers will require coordinated efforts from local organizations, policymakers, and community advocates alike.

By understanding the true depth of these financial hardships, leaders hope to better support vulnerable populations throughout the state. Ensuring long-term stability remains a primary goal for community health advocates as they work to alleviate hunger in our neighborhoods.
