History of Ski Sundown

Ski Sundown has transformed from a small operation known as Satan’s Ridge to a popular skiing destination in Connecticut over several decades. The ski area has evolved through different ownership and development phases since the 1960s.

Founding and Early Years

The idea for what would become Ski Sundown came to engineer Russell Smith on a hot summer day in 1960. His vision became reality when Satan’s Ridge ski area officially opened on January 11, 1964. Frank S. Linnel and Russell J. Smith established the area with three slopes, one mile-long trail, and two lifts – a chairlift and a rope tow.

The early infrastructure was basic but functional. A Hall T-Bar was installed in 1963 to bring skiers to the summit, as shown in a 1963 brochure from Satan’s Ridge. The area continued to grow with a second T-Bar added in 1965, expanding options for skiers.

Satan’s Ridge provided Connecticut residents with convenient access to winter recreation without traveling to northern New England. The name change to Ski Sundown came later as the resort developed.

Recent Developments

Ski Sundown has undergone significant improvements in recent decades. The resort has expanded its trail system beyond the original slopes and mile-long trail. Modern snowmaking equipment now ensures reliable conditions throughout the winter season.
