History of Lake Wintergreen

Lake Wintergreen has a rich history dating back to the 1860s when it became an important water source for the growing communities nearby. Its story shows how natural resources were developed to meet human needs.

Formation and Early Use

The story of Lake Wintergreen began in the 1860s when the Mountain Water Company first developed it as a water resource. Later, the Fair Haven Water Company (FHWC) took over operations, establishing the lake as a crucial water supply for New Haven.

You might be surprised to learn that this peaceful body of water once served such an important purpose! The companies built infrastructure to collect and distribute water to growing communities in the area.

The lake became part of a larger system that provided fresh water to New Haven residents. During this time, the area around the lake was carefully managed to protect the water quality.

Changes Over Time

Lake Wintergreen supplied water to New Haven for approximately 100 years, finally ending its service as a public water supply in 1978. By 1980, it was completely abandoned as a water source as newer systems replaced it.

After its retirement as a water supply, the lake transitioned to recreational use. Today, you’ll find it as part of the beautiful West Rock Ridge State Park, where it serves a very different purpose than its founders intended.

A nature trail now surrounds the lake, connecting to the park’s broader trail system including the Regicides Trail. You can enjoy activities like canoeing and fishing in these waters that once quenched the thirst of an entire city.

The transformation from utility to recreation spot makes Lake Wintergreen a fascinating example of how natural resources can be repurposed over time.
