A Sunday Scare in Woodstock
Most Sundays in Connecticut mean quiet drives, family visits, or maybe a stop at the farmer’s market. That wasn’t the case for folks near 782 Route 171 in Woodstock this past Sunday.
A normal afternoon got upended by a crash and a sudden manhunt. The quick action from State Police turned what could have been chaos into a controlled response.
It all started with a car crash reported by several 911 calls around 4:51 p.m. Inside the car were a 35-year-old man from Pomfret and a 42-year-old woman from Putnam.
What began as a simple accident near a utility pole quickly turned into something bigger. The attempt to dodge responsibility rattled the usually calm neighborhood.
The Immediate Aftermath and the Escape
Troopers showed up and instantly sensed something wasn’t right. The Pomfret man had lost control and slammed into a utility pole.
The woman stayed at the scene with just minor injuries, but the driver and the Putnam woman bolted into the thick woods. That move set off a fast law enforcement response.
A trooper and a K-9 unit tracked them through about 1.3 miles of swamp and tangled brush. That’s no easy trek, and it shows just how far some folks will go to try to get away.

Discovery of Evidence and Subsequent Arrests
Police caught up with the female passenger near Pulpit Road and Route 171. She said the driver was still out there but claimed she didn’t know where he’d gone.
Soon after, police found a big bag tossed near 815 Route 171. The contents? Pretty suspicious, to say the least.
Inside was the driver’s license, about $2,000 cash, several prescription pills, suboxone, a white rock-like substance that sure looked like illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a handful of empty sandwich bags. That discovery shed a lot of light on what was really going on.
Police kept digging, checking security footage and bringing in more K-9 units. Eventually, they found the driver near Rocky Hill Road.
He had fentanyl, more drug gear, and a bit more cash on him. The fentanyl alone makes this a pretty serious deal.
Charges and Judicial Proceedings
The Pomfret man now faces a daunting list of 11 charges. These include evading responsibility, causing physical injury, and operating his vehicle under suspension.
He’s also got multiple narcotics-related charges, based on what officers found both on him and in the discarded bag. His bail sits at a hefty $50,000 cash-surety bond.
On top of that, there’s an extra $200,000 bond tied to older failure-to-appear warrants. That definitely points to a pattern of dodging court dates.
The Putnam woman faces a charge for interfering with an officer. She was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond.
Both showed up in court on Tuesday. The driver needed medical attention for injuries from the crash, so he went to Hartford Hospital before dealing with his legal troubles.
