Details of the Fatal Motorcycle Accident

The crash happened early Saturday morning in Groton. The community’s still shaken from several recent traffic incidents.

Barry McLarty, 67, of Ledyard, was heading south on Route 117 near Gales Ferry Road around 8:30 a.m. when the accident happened. Police said McLarty lost control of his motorcycle, and it fell onto its left side.

The bike slid across into the northbound lane and hit the curb on the east side of the road. No other vehicles got involved, according to authorities.

Emergency Response and Medical Attention

First responders showed up quickly and found McLarty unconscious with severe injuries. Emergency medical crews rushed him to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, where doctors tried to save him.

McLarty’s condition worsened through the day. Hospital staff confirmed he died at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, roughly six hours after the accident.

Motorcycle Safety Concerns in Connecticut

This crash puts a spotlight on growing concerns about motorcycle safety in Connecticut. Other towns—Norwich, Waterford, Stonington—have seen similar accidents, especially in spring and summer when more motorcycles hit the roads.

Safety experts from Hartford have pointed out a few main risk factors:

  • Rough road conditions, especially after winter
  • Heavier weekend recreational traffic
  • Drivers not spotting motorcyclists
  • Speed and control issues on Connecticut’s winding roads
  • Regional Impact and Community Response

McLarty was well-known in Ledyard, and news of his passing hit many in southeastern Connecticut hard. Local motorcycle groups from Mystic to Colchester have shared condolences with his family.

“This is a devastating reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the road,” said a representative from a New London County motorcycle safety group. “Our thoughts are with Mr. McLarty’s family during this difficult time.”

    Ongoing Investigation

The Groton Police Department is still looking into what caused the crash. They haven’t said yet if road conditions, a mechanical issue, or a medical emergency played a role in McLarty losing control.

Police are asking anyone who saw the accident or has information to come forward. Folks from Groton, Ledyard, and nearby towns with details are encouraged to contact the Groton Police Department directly.

    Safety Reminders for Connecticut Motorists

As warmer weather rolls in, authorities in Stamford and across Connecticut are urging motorists to stay alert. Drivers really need to watch for motorcyclists, and riders should stick to proper safety gear and defensive driving.

Even experienced riders like McLarty face real risks out there. With summer traffic building from Bridgeport to Windham, officials hope everyone pays a little more attention on the roads.
