Emergency crews took several people to Waterbury for treatment. State police now want help from the public to piece together what led to the wreck.

Details of the Southington Interstate 691 Crash

Police said the crash happened at about 9:40 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-691. A 2009 Acura, driven by the Windsor man, drifted across every eastbound lane before shooting over the grassy median and into the westbound highway.

Once in the westbound lanes, the Acura crashed head-on into a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The force of the impact left both vehicles badly damaged, and tow trucks had to haul them away.

Occupants Involved and Injuries

A 37-year-old woman from Prospect drove the pickup, and a 67-year-old man rode as her passenger. Both suffered minor injuries and went to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

A 24-year-old passenger from Windsor, riding in the Acura, also went to St. Mary’s with minor injuries. The Acura’s driver got what police called a suspected serious injury and was admitted to the same hospital.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Local EMS teams and state police showed up fast, locked down the scene, and rerouted traffic. The crash forced temporary road closures, which backed up cars along the highway and into nearby towns like Meriden and Cheshire.

Troop I state police in Bethany are digging into the cause. They haven’t said yet whether speed, impairment, or mechanical trouble played a role.

Public Assistance Requested

Investigators want anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam video from the area around that time to reach out to Trooper Patrick Miko at Troop I-Bethany. Even a small tip or detail might help them figure out what actually happened that night on I-691.

Local Impact of Serious Highway Collisions

Major wrecks like this ripple through Connecticut communities. Beyond the immediate injuries and property damage, crashes on fast-moving roads like I-691 make things dicey for drivers from towns like Middletown, Bristol, and New Britain who use these routes daily.

The risk of loss of life in wrong-way or head-on collisions is incredibly high. These events often push people to call for better safety features, more patrols, or fresh public awareness campaigns.

Staying Safe on Connecticut Highways

State traffic safety officials say drivers can cut their risk by sticking to speed limits, ditching distractions, and staying alert for sudden lane changes or weird driving. If you spot a car veering into oncoming lanes, police urge you to pull over safely and call 911 right away.

  • Stay aware of road and traffic conditions, especially at night.
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles to allow time to react.
  • Use dashcams to document road events—footage can be valuable in investigations.
  • Report any suspicious or unsafe driving to local authorities.

Moving Forward

The investigation is still underway. Right now, everyone’s trying to figure out why this crash happened and how to keep it from happening again.

People living in Southington, Windsor, and nearby Connecticut towns know that roadway safety is something everyone needs to care about. It really does come down to a shared effort.

If you know anything, Troop I-Bethany wants to hear from you. Local drivers who step up and share information could help make sense of what happened Saturday night—and maybe even prevent future tragedies.
